Suggested Reading/Movies/Sites
I suggest "Living in a Foriegn Language" as a must read for all who are coming to La Romita. It depicts life for an American buying a house in Umbria and It is a really fun read. Michael Tucker, former star of LA Law gives a great picture of what there is to fall in love with in Umbria and specifically details Spoleto which is not far from La Romita and on our visit itinerary.

My House in Umbria (Book&Movie)
The Book: This is a writer's book as it goes in and out of the mind of the main character who is a novel writer and the owner of the house in Umbria The book gives little insight to Umbria but is an interesting read. The Movie is a better recommend for attendees at La Romita because it does take in the landscape and share some of Umbria's beauty and is generally more upbeat. Maggie Smith plays the lead in this most unusual story.
French Dirt (Book)
This Book is obviously not about Umbria, but this joy of a read gives a fabulous description of an American living in a tiny European village - This book is a real good tone setter for our trip to Italy!

Umbrian War (Book)
This World War II story of the town of Citta della Pieve, is incitful look of what it was like as a villager living through this epic time of battle. This book is not for the fragile of heart as it does portray the harshness of this time in Italy.
Under the Tuscun Sun (Book&Movie)
Movie:A beautiful tale of how a forlorn American woman can find happiness in the countryside of Tuscany.
Book: Chronicles of an American Couple in buying a house in Tuscany
Stealing Beauty (Movie)
A coming of age story of a young woman played by Liv Tyler as she returns to her mother's previous residence in her youthful adventurous life in the countryside of Italy at the open Villa of her mother's friend and fellow artist. A young Rachel Weiss and Jeremy Irons play pivotal roles in this movie which does a good job of portraying alter visions of artistic minds and the differences between expectations and reality.
LETTERS TO JULIET (came out in June)
This film set primarily in Italy is a delightful romance starring Amanda Seigfried and Vanessa Redgrave. The beautiful scenery begins in Verona, then takes us on a long drive through enchanting landscapes to Siena in the heart of Tuscany. A nostalgic search takes us through surrounding vineyard country (not so very far from Perugia). Perhaps it has a predictable ending, but who cares? The journey is a joy and the view is gorgeous!
If you haven't seen it - you should. I saw it twice!
